our boat
( see modifications / repairs to the initial /
buying status at the bottom )
Our boat is a ”Van de Stadt 34” type.
Van de Stadt is one of Netherlands most reputable yacht designers, who sells quite a number of stock plans to self-builders and has made many successful designs for other commercial shipyards.
The previous Dutch owner of our boat has bought the plans from Van de Stadt in 1990 and has let manufacture the hull and the interior insulation at a commercial shipyard. Then he started to complete the boat by himself, what took him almost 6 years. The boat got completed and watered in 1966. The previous owner sailed the boat for some time at the Netherlands close ocean and the Ijsselmeer, but later – as he told us – did not have enough time for the boat and decided to sell it finally.
The boat has the confirmation of Van de Stadt as being built according to the plans and requirements of the designer.
Short, but not complete, description of the boat:
hull made of steel
length over all: 10,25 m
length water line: 8 m
beam 3,30 m
draft: 1,8 m
displacement: 5,4 t
mast height above waterline: 15,70 m
sail area: 66 m² (main, genua) +storm jib, + spinnaker
fuel tank: 150 l
water tank: 150 l
diesel engine: Yanmar 27 HP
Radar (Raymarine b/w), electronic chart plotter, GPS, Log, Echo Sounder etc.
VHF Radio communication, chart table
automatic life wests, self blowable life boat for 4 people, signal rockets etc. (EPIRB will be bought later)
solar panels, wind generator, 12V batteries (starter and consumer separated)
heating: Eberspächer Diesel heating; radio with CD/MP3 Player and stereo loud speakers,TV Antenna
gas oven, electric fridge (12V), manual toilet (60l holding tank)
small dinghy for 2 people, JOHNSON 2,5 HP outboard motor
The only thing that we really miss is an electric anchor winch which will be difficult to install because of the missing power lines from the batteries to the bow.
The boat is registered with the Austrian Ship Register, officially licenced for world-wide offshore sailing for a crew of 4 (I applied only for a crew of 4, although the design would allow also a crew of 6).
We consider the boat as a fast, safe and seaworthy going yacht, due to the presently limited tank capacities only we would not consider it for world wide sailing, however sufficient for all European oceans.
Over all, the boat fulfills 80 % of our requirements, the design and the finishing fits us 100 %, however there is too much electronic and electric equipment on the boat – apart from the missing electric anchor winch - which will require most probably much of maintenance and renewal – and much headache.
Although the sailing rig is designed for one hand sailing, it is very sophisticated to be operated by one person.
